Our Story
Honest Guidance for
Global Property Investors
We publish independent guides for expat and international investors. No developer affiliations, no referral arrangements, no agenda beyond giving you the information you actually need.
Where We Come From
ProperWise has been publishing since 2015. It started in Boston as a small property resource, went through several iterations over the years, and eventually landed where it is now: a focused, independent guide for people buying property outside their home country.
That specific reader — the expat, the global nomad, the investor looking at Portugal or Japan or Dubai from a distance — is genuinely underserved. Most of the content out there is written by agents or developers with something to sell, or by generalists who have never actually dealt with a Fideicomiso or filed an FBAR. We've found that the readers who come here appreciate the difference.
We cover the markets, legal frameworks, financing options, and tax structures that matter to cross-border buyers. We try to write the guide we wish had existed before we made our own decisions — the kind that tells you what a process actually costs, how long it actually takes, and what the real risks are.
How We Work
Independent
We have no developer affiliations, no agency referral fees, and no financial relationships that influence what we write. Sponsored content is clearly labelled and held to the same factual standards as editorial.
Expert-Reviewed
Country guides are reviewed by a licensed professional in that jurisdiction — attorney, CPA, or accredited broker with direct local experience — before we publish.
Kept Current
Tax and regulatory content is audited quarterly. When laws change — and they do, frequently — we update the relevant guides and date the revision visibly at the top.
Who Writes Here
Our contributors are practitioners, not journalists. They have worked in the markets they cover — as brokers, lawyers, tax advisors, and investors — and they write from that experience.

Editorial Standards
A few things we take seriously, and which are worth being explicit about:
- Sources: Statistics are cited. We use primary sources where possible — government registries, central bank data, official transaction records — over aggregator summaries that may be stale or selectively presented.
- Local review: We do not publish country-specific legal or tax content without having it reviewed by a practitioner licensed or experienced in that jurisdiction. This adds time. It is worth it.
- Conflicts of interest: If a contributor has a personal financial position in a market or company mentioned in an article, it is disclosed at the top. No exceptions.
- Not financial advice: Our guides are informational. They are not a substitute for advice from a qualified property lawyer or tax professional, and we say so directly in any article where that distinction matters.
- Corrections: If something is wrong, we want to know. Use the contact page. We correct factual errors promptly and note the correction in the article.
